A dark mode writing website, free and in your browser
Just Write is a free online writing space with a real dark mode. Open the page, click the moon icon, and write light-on-dark. No sign up, no login, no settings maze.
Dark mode in one click
The moon icon in the menu switches the entire page — background, text and word counter — to a dark theme. Not just a dimmed text box floating on a white page: the whole screen goes dark. Combine it with full screen and the optional typewriter sounds and you have a writing environment made for late nights.
Why write on a dark page
If you write at night, a bright white page in a dark room is basically a flashlight pointed at your face. A dark background cuts the glare, is easier on your eyes during long sessions, and makes the text — the only thing that matters — the brightest thing on screen.
And yes, it also just looks good. If you're after an aesthetic, minimal writing setup, a full-screen dark page with nothing on it but your words is hard to beat.
Everything else you get
- Full-screen, distraction-free editor
- Optional typewriter sounds
- Writing timer and word count goal
- Local autosave in your browser, so closing the tab doesn't lose your text
- No sign up, no login, no account — the URL is the editor
- Free, with nothing locked behind a paywall
The one rule
Just Write is built for free writing: you can't edit or delete what you've already written, only keep moving forward. That single constraint is what makes it work against writer's block — for morning pages, journaling, and messy first drafts.
